Carbon monoxide detector saves Aurora veteran’s family from disaster

Russell Scot Rhoda 🇺🇸

As many of you know, I founded Veteran Housing Solutions and Ride with Valor because I’ve seen firsthand how quickly a Veteran can lose stability — and how life-changing it is when they regain it.
Our Hearth & Home for Veterans Program isn’t just about remodeling houses.
It’s about restoring dignity.
It’s about rebuilding confidence.
It’s about giving a Veteran a real fresh start — often after homelessness or serious hardship.

A Roof for a Veteran 🇺🇸

Trumbull County disabled Veteran Foit, who served three combat tours in Iraq with the U.S. Army, recently discovered his leaking roof could not be repaired and needed full replacement. With limited savings, his only option was a high-interest loan.
After learning about Veteran Housing Solutions, his wife encouraged him to apply for assistance.
Today, Foit visited the VHS office and received a $17,098.08 check made directly to his roofing contractor, ensuring his home will remain safe and secure without putting the family into debt.
This is what Veteran Housing Solutions is all about—helping our aging and disabled Veterans live safely in the homes they fought to protect. 🇺🇸

Veterans Need Homes

As a Veteran and founder of Veteran Housing Solutions, I’m deeply concerned about the direction some federal policies appear to be moving.
Veterans already face an uphill battle navigating the VA disability system. Under 38 CFR Part 4, disability ratings determine the compensation many Veterans rely on to survive. Now many Veterans fear their benefits could be reduced if someone claims their condition has “improved” or suspects “fraud.”
At the same time, the federal government recently announced steps allowing VA attorneys to pursue guardianship or conservatorship through state courts for certain vulnerable Veterans — including some who are homeless or at risk.
That raises a serious question:
Why are we discussing institutional control over Veterans instead of expanding housing solutions that keep them independent?
Congress previously authorized the Veterans Housing Rehabilitation and Modification Pilot Program (VHRMP), which allowed trusted nonprofits to repair and modify homes for disabled and aging Veterans. Veteran Housing Solutions was honored to be one of only five organizations nationwide selected to deliver this program.
Through initiatives like our Hearth & Home for Veterans, we rehabilitate vacant houses and create safe, accessible, and affordable homes for homeless, disabled, and aging Veterans. Housing restores dignity, independence, and stability.
I’ve repeatedly asked to meet with my Congressman, Congressman Max Miller, to discuss expanding solutions like this. So far, those requests have been met with automated replies or silence.
Our Veterans deserve more than form emails. They deserve real solutions.
Homes create independence. Institutionalization removes it.
Let’s choose the right path for those who served. 🇺🇸

Every Wednesday, Ride with Valor delivers pizza

Every Wednesday, Ride with Valor delivers pizza to Veteran patients on the 6th floor of the Cleveland VA Medical Center.
This week, we added new t-shirts and socks — because our heroes deserve nothing but the best. 🇺🇸🍕
Thank you to everyone who helps make our Weekly Wednesday deliveries possible.

A Vietnam Veteran’s Smile Restored

When a local Vietnam Veteran (U.S. Army) was facing more than $30,000 in dental estimates he simply could not afford, RIDE WITH VALOR volunteer Cathy Thomas stepped in without hesitation.
Cathy contacted longtime RWV supporter Strongsville Smile Keepers, and Dr. Matthew Gaebelein once again answered the call to serve.
After a full exam, Dr. Gaebelein developed a 5-visit treatment plan — at no cost to this Vietnam Veteran.
During the first 6-hour visit alone:
✔️ Jawbone realigned
✔️ Bite corrected
✔️ Multiple teeth filled
✔️ Three teeth added on top, one on the bottom
✔️ Full cleaning and polishing
Here’s what our Veteran shared afterward:
“WOW!!!
6 hours long, realigned my jawbone, corrected my bite, filled teeth, added three teeth on top, and one on the bottom. Huge difference.
Next visit March 4 @10:20 he does other side.
Also, he has a high school young man observing as he wants to become a dentist.
Took lots of photos.
The staff was very good also. Gums cleaned, teeth cleaned and polished.
I’m putting on FB, Instagram, and Google reviews… really talented.”
For a Vietnam Veteran who has already given so much, this is about more than dental work.
It’s about dignity. Health. Confidence. Relief from pain.
And we love that a young high school student was observing — witnessing firsthand what it means to serve those who served.
Thank you, Dr. Gaebelein, and the entire Strongsville Smile Keepers team, for standing with our Veterans once again.
This is community in action.

hank you very much for the meals you provided to our officers over Thanksgiving. What a wonderful way to let officers know, especially those that work and are not able to celebrate with their families, that they are valued for the work they do. Your kind gesture left a positive impression
